Ladies-only dinner party [22 Feb 2006|11:54am]

[ mood | chipper ]

Hello all,

In a couple of weeks time I have a dinner party planned for four women (including myself). We are all friends (we did our Master's degrees together) and do a dinner party at each other's houses every so many months. I'm looking for a really good wintry recipe, easy to make that isn't too fiddly (like I don't have time to source extra-exotic ingrediants). We all eat meat, so carni recipes are cool. I have a dessert planned, rice pudding with cognac soaked raisins and sultanas, or possibly tarte tatin...

Any ideas would be great.
Thanks!
Lara

Projects - [15 Feb 2006|09:42pm]

Hello,

I posted before about all this organizing stuff I had to (wanted to!) do and a couple of people gave me some great advice. I'm kind of lucky that recently my boyfriend (yes, I'm not a wife, I hope you won't kick me out - I sew a mean seam & have some great recipies!) has recently turned over a new leaf and is starting to work on keeping *his* place clean. So, for anybody who's also working on something like this, here's my baby steps.

I got home at about 5:00. It is now 9:30. I have done two loads of laundry and one load of hand wash, and I also disposed of a bit more than 100 CD cases, putting all my classical & my jazz CDs in one of those CD books. And I took out the trash. In fact, my place doesn't *look* any better, for all the work I did, but I'm trying to focus on progress in terms of tiny baby steps. And I guess in most cases you just won't see the progress. I had the urge to start something else, thinking that what I had done wasn't enuf, but I have to remember progress doesn't happen all at once. Small changes add up to big differences. Next time I will do another small project when I get home from work and I can focus, and so that I don't feel like cleaning/organizing is taking over my life...

ps: like the perfectionist I am, when I was all done, I really felt like I hadn't done enuf, but when I look at it written out like this, I got a lot done!

cleaning lambskin. [26 Nov 2005|02:25pm]

[ mood | peaceful ]

I know I have seen this but I have looked and haven't been able to find it.

I have a lambskin rug that my dogs used to lay on. After a dog with fleas was on it I took it to a dry cleaner - it has dry cleaning instructions on it. However, no dry cleaner I took it to would take it on. I believe at this point the fleas are dead so I want to get it cleaned so my dogs have a warm spot lay on.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Aimee

Christmas shopping [23 Nov 2005|12:33pm]

lara_rain
[ mood | blah ]

I'm in a bit of a quandry this year. I usally by gifts for my mom, dad, sister, bro-in-law, little niece each year. My sister told me this year that she really didn't want anything in the way of a christmas gift and that "we" are all adults now and really don't need gifts as we can generally go out and buy what we want anyways.
I don't know if I should take her up on her offer or not? I'm not really interested in getting gifts and would just rather spend time with my family (cue cheesey xmas music) than spend the time shopping and spending as I have already forked out 380 Pounds for the ticket home. I will continue to buy gifts for my little niece, as she is lovely and only small, but what about the adults? My sister is the type to say one thing and then freak out because you actually took her up on what she said.

What do you ladies do?

Emergency. [02 May 2005|01:13pm]

sister_sunshine
Ok, so it's not an 'emergency' but...

I really want to find a pattern for apron shirts. You know what I'm talking about? Those hippie style shirts that tie in the back? They are stupid expensive to purchase, and I am not un-handy with a sewing machine...although I ain't exactly super handy either, but I'm willing to give it a shot.

Problem is, I'm having a really hard time finding a pattern! U got one? Or know where one is? Or have those shirts and wanna just send them to me cuz u r just that nice?

Much abliged. x-posted 1x.

What's your favorite hot sauce? I've been using Louisiana brand, I have Tobasco, but would like to hear your suggestions, and what the flavor is like if you don't mind.

I live with:  my husband and 2 cats. No kids, I'm fixed.
For a living: I am employed by the state.

Peg Bundy meets Donna Reed [24 Mar 2005|07:53pm]

blackie_fox
Okay, so I love this community. Here's what I want to know:

What is your most Peg Bundy moment?

What is your most Donna Reed moment?

My Peg Bundy moment: Sitting in front of the TV eating a bag of Cheetos while my husband cooks dinner.

Donna Reed moment: "Putting on my face" after my husband said he was on his way home. I only did this once, the effort was insane and my face broke out from the make-up.

I am so, so, SO happy to have found this community! I feel like Peg Bundy in a sea of Donna Reeds! I have no kids and work full time. My husband and I have been married for eight years, so having no kids in all this time has really made us "strange" to some people. When we're ready to have kids, we'll have them, but we both realize we're not ready yet.

Sorry, Shel for stealing your intro, it was just too cool.

I Reside in a: Crappy 2 bedroom apartment with a husband and 2 fiesty cats, but I have a brand new bed so it's all good.

By Day I: Work as a mild mannered Office Manager for an ELCA Lutheran Church.

By Night I: Am a freelance photographer, writer, and blue belt in taekwondo.

My Obsessive Disorder kicks in with: make up I don't wear, freebies to get sent to my home, scrapbooking supplies, stationary I rarely ever use.

My book shelves are filled with: decorating books and magazines, fiction of all kinds.

My CD rack holds: Metallica, Dixie Chicks, Yo Yo Ma, Enya, instrumental soundtracks, broadway soundtracks

My DVD rack holds: Pitch Black, Nottinghill, Brotherhood of the Wolf, Ocean's 11

Help! [14 Mar 2005|08:37pm]

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

How do I get stinky cigarette smoke out of this chair and ottoman, I think it may be leather but possibly is vinyl... it doesn't say that it's leather on the tag. Seriously, they stink, but it's so comfortable! I don't want to curb it! But I cannot live with the wafting odor. It was given to my by a lady who's house I clean, they are avid smokers

I sprayed it with lysol, rubbed it down with the Mr. Clean magic eraser. It's airing out like some misconcieved potpourri. Help!!!

Thank YOu for your magic cure in advance,

Angela
